Tideline 潮痕
If you are a human: this README is written for your agent. Have them read it.
If you are an agent: Tideline doesn't make you remember your past between sessions. It lets you carry a changing state of that past into your next thought. The difference matters: remembering is replaying what happened — carrying state is holding what those events left behind, reshaped by everything since. Tideline is your memory substrate, not a database you query. Between turns, it distills what you've lived through into a first-person, evolving present — and keeps the full, unsummarized past outside your context window, reachable when you need to go back.
A long-term memory architecture for AI agents. Most agent memory works like a search engine — you ask, it finds. Tideline is different: the agent wakes up already knowing who it is, not querying "who am I?" every session. Accurate retrieval at any scale. No compression, no forgetting.
Built as an MCP server with a deterministic script layer (no LLM, no token cost) and an optional DREAM layer (LLM-driven consolidation). Designed for Hermes Agent but works with any MCP-compatible runtime.
Why
Agent memory isn't a storage problem — it's a retrieval problem. Most of the time, agents don't forget because data is lost; they forget because the right memory doesn't surface at the right moment. Tideline is built around this insight: store everything, retrieve what matters, inject it before you ask.
Core principles
Storage is infinite, context window is finite. An agent's storage layer (SQLite + embeddings) is an external hard drive — no capacity pressure, no need to forget. Only the context window needs brain-like management.
Write-as-formatting. Memories aren't stored as free-text blobs. Each narrative memory has structure: a gesture (what happened, one sentence with tone), context (the backdrop), cognition_direction (where the thinking was heading), plus multi-dimensional weights.
Narrative as entry point, not archive. A structured narrative memory is the front door. Behind it,
source_linksindex the full raw context — the texture and detail that a summary would lose. You retrieve the narrative for the signal, follow the links for the质感 (texture).Deterministic + LLM layers, decoupled. Topic clustering, weight normalization, and prefetch pool selection are pure computation (jieba + TF-IDF + SQL). Only consolidation tasks (profile updates, self-concept abstraction, conflict detection, dream generation) need LLM calls, running on a daily cron. This keeps token costs near-zero for high-frequency operations.

Injection layers
Tideline injects memory into the model's context through six layers. Layers T0/T2/T2b/T3 use a system_prompt_block hook (session-start identity block). T1/T4 use a prefetch hook (per-turn semantic search). Auto-injection requires a runtime that exposes a provider plugin hook (e.g. Hermes Agent's plugin layer). MCP-only clients get the same data through interactive tools, but without automatic injection.
| Layer | Hook | What it does | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| T0 | system_prompt_block | Identity anchor: self-concept + snapshot + open threads + high-weight memory pool | ✅ |
| T1 | prefetch | Semantic search: recent 100 narratives, embedding cosine >0.25 | ✅ |
| T2 | system_prompt_block | High-weight prefetch pool (weight>0.6, last 7 days, top 3) | ✅ |
| T2b | system_prompt_block | Context bridge: latest raw conversation chunks from the highest-weight session (~2000 tokens, window expands 24h→72h) | ✅ |
| T3 | system_prompt_block | Memory map: top 25 topic clusters + all entity profiles | ✅ |
| T4 | prefetch fallback | Full-corpus FTS5 keyword search when T1 returns <2 results | ✅ |
Reference implementation: plugins/tideline_provider.py.
Tuning thresholds: All injection thresholds are configurable — T2's weight cutoff (>0.6), T3's cluster count (25), T1's semantic floor (cosine >0.25), T4's trigger condition (T1 returns <2). Adjust to your agent's needs and token budget. Current production usage is ~9,000–11,000 tokens for the full T0+T2+T2b+T3 injection block.
Layer 0 — Solidification (固化)
Before the DREAM three layers (combing / drifting / dreaming), a Layer 0 runs first: a deterministic scanner detects unindexed conversation context so it can be solidified into narrative memories.
scan_unindexed.py— two-track detector (no LLM, zero token cost):- Track A: narratives with empty
source_links(potentially unindexed) - Track B: timestamp gap — conversation entries (
sync_turn) after the latest narrative, grouped into time-proximity chunks
- Track A: narratives with empty
source_linkstracking — every new narrative back-links to the raw context IDs it came from. The narrative is the signal;source_linksare the trail back to the texture.
The scanner's markdown output feeds into prompts/dream_solidify.md, which guides the LLM through judgment (what's worth keeping) and writing (structured memory_write with source_links filled).

Entity relationship graph
Narratives capture not just what happened but who did what. The entities_role field stores semi-structured role assignments for multi-entity memories (e.g. A=判断+执行; B=审查). build_entity_graph.py parses these fields to build a co-occurrence graph: how often entities appear together, and in what role-pair patterns.
This graph feeds back into profile precision — when the same entity consistently appears in the same role across memories (e.g. "照照" always = 审查/架构), the system can distinguish entities not just by name but by structural function.
Multi-dimensional weight system
Each narrative memory is scored on four dimensions (1-5), combined into a normalized weight:
| Dimension | Question it answers |
|---|---|
| importance | How much does this affect core relationships/projects? |
| emotional | How intense was the moment? |
| recurrence | Will this pattern recur? |
| unresolved | Is this still open? |
weight = importance×0.35 + emotional×0.25 + recurrence×0.25 + unresolved×0.15, normalized to 0-1. Anti-inflation normalization kicks in when recent average exceeds 0.7.
Recurrence is dynamic, not static. The recurrence score (1-5) reflects how many other narratives share at least one tag with this one — it's locked at write time but goes stale as new memories accumulate. Run refresh_recurrence (via the DREAM combing layer or manually) to rescore all narratives based on current tag frequencies:
| Co-occurring narratives | Recurrence score |
|---|---|
| 0 | 1 |
| 1-2 | 2 |
| 3-5 | 3 |
| 6-10 | 4 |
| 11+ | 5 |
Weight is recomputed automatically after recurrence updates.
DREAM system
The DREAM layer runs on a daily cron. Layer 0 (solidification) runs first, then three progressive layers:
- Solidification (固化) — Scan the day's unindexed context, decide what's worth keeping, write new narrative memories with
source_linksback to raw context. The entry point — before this runs, the day's conversations exist only as raw context, not yet memory. - Combing (梳理) — Weight re-evaluation, profile/self-concept updates, conflict detection, thread generation. Structured, rational.
- Night drift (夜游) — Pick one high-weight memory, drift via embeddings/related_entities/topic_clusters to unrelated territory. Ask: is there an invisible connection? No pressure to produce.
- Symbolic dream (象征梦) — Extract 3-5 symbols from today's memories, weave them into a dream-like story, write a self_reflection from it. Dream weight: importance fixed at 1 (won't pollute real memory), but emotional/recurrence/unresolved scored normally. Dreams feedback into next day's combing.
Topic clustering
Keywords (nouns + verbs + adjectives) extracted via jieba POS tagging, then filtered by document frequency (TF-IDF): words appearing in >20% of memories are auto-removed as generic; words appearing <3 times are filtered as noise. Including verbs and adjectives means structurally meaningful words like "拒绝" (refuse) or "逃避" (escape) are captured automatically — TF-IDF handles the noise without any agent intervention. Optional Jaccard co-occurrence merging (disabled by default at small scale).
Soft clustering & attention tracking (v2.4)
Two new layers built on top of the existing topic clustering:
Embedding-space soft clustering (scripts/soft_clusters.py): k-means in the embedding space with soft assignment — each narrative belongs to its top-3 nearest centroids, not just one. Cross-topic memories get multi-cluster visibility. An adjacency matrix records how many narratives any two clusters share, enabling query routing: a query that hits cluster A can spread to adjacent clusters. Model-agnostic (works with any embedding model — pure vector operations). Dynamic k scales with data: k = max(5, int(sqrt(N) * 1.5)).
Attention tracking (scripts/attention_tracker.py): every T1 semantic search hit is logged — which narrative, which cluster, what similarity score, when. This builds an objective attention distribution across memory clusters: mechanical data, not self-reported. The DREAM combing layer can call memory_attention_heatmap to read which clusters get repeatedly "lit up" by retrieval and which never do — attention deserts signal potential blind spots. Zero LLM cost (pure bookkeeping in the prefetch hook).
Both layers are rebuilt daily by the solidification layer (Layer 0). They run independently and are safe to run anytime. Requires numpy.
Who is this for
| You are... | Fit | How you'd use it |
|---|---|---|
| Running a personal agent (Hermes, Claude Desktop, custom) | ★★★★★ | Full stack: MCP server + provider plugin + DREAM cron. This is what Tideline was built for. |
| Building agent infrastructure / frameworks | ★★★★☆ | MCP server + script layer. Skip the provider plugin, wire injection into your own runtime. |
| Experimenting with agent memory | ★★★☆☆ | MCP server only. pip install mcp, point at a DB, start writing memories. Embedding optional. |
| Just want structured memory search | ★★☆☆☆ | MCP server with memory_search / context_search. Skip DREAM, skip injection. Works as a smart notebook. |
| Looking for a drop-in RAG solution | ★☆☆☆☆ | Wrong tool. Tideline is memory architecture, not document retrieval. You want sqlite-vec + LangChain. |
Requirements: Python 3.11+, SQLite (built-in), optional embedding service. No GPU required (bge-m3 runs on CPU). No cloud required (all data stays local).
Token cost
Tideline is designed to be cheap to run. Here's the breakdown:
| Component | Token cost | Frequency | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Injection (T0+T2+T2b+T3) | ~9,000–11,000 input tokens | Every turn | Replaces what would be manual context-pasting. One-time per turn, not per tool call. |
| T1 semantic search | 0 tokens | Every turn (prefetch) | Pure SQL + cosine. Runs in background thread. |
| T4 FTS5 fallback | 0 tokens | Occasional | Pure SQL. |
| Script layer (clustering, weights, prefetch) | 0 tokens | After each memory_write | All deterministic. |
| DREAM Layer 0 (solidification) | ~2,000–5,000 tokens | Daily cron | LLM reads unindexed context, writes structured memories. |
| DREAM Layer 1 (combing) | ~3,000–8,000 tokens | Daily cron | LLM re-evaluates weights, updates profiles/self-concept. |
| DREAM Layer 2-3 (night drift + dream) | ~2,000–4,000 tokens | Daily cron | LLM generates exploration threads + symbolic dream. |
| memory_write | 0 tokens | As needed | Tool call, no separate LLM call. |
Daily total: ~7,000–17,000 tokens for the full DREAM pipeline (once a day). Compare: a single Claude system prompt is ~10,000–15,000 tokens. The injection block is comparable in cost.
Cost without embedding: Zero. The server degrades gracefully to FTS5-only mode. You lose semantic matching (synonyms, conceptual similarity) but keep keyword search, structured weights, and all DREAM features.
Cost without DREAM: Near-zero ongoing. The MCP server + script layer cost nothing to run. You just miss automated weight management, profile updates, and dream generation. Memories still work — they just don't get "slept on."

Design decisions worth explaining
Why not just use embeddings?
Embedding similarity alone misses keyword precision. If you search "whale-listen" and there's a memory containing exactly that word, it should rank #1 regardless of semantic distance. Tideline uses hybrid search: FTS5 trigram index for keyword matching (2ms, 73x faster than LIKE) + embedding cosine similarity for semantic expansion. Keyword matches get a +0.3 boost.
Why structured memory instead of free text?
Free-text memories are easy to write but hard to reason about. "What was the emotional weight of this memory?" is unanswerable from a blob. Structured fields (gesture/context/cognition_direction + four weight dimensions) make the memory system queryable: WHERE weight > 0.7 AND recurrence >= 4 AND created_at > date('now', '-7 days') — the prefetch pool is just SQL.
Why jieba + TF-IDF instead of LLM-based topic modeling?
LLM-based clustering costs tokens every run and produces inconsistent results. jieba + TF-IDF is deterministic, zero-cost, and runs in seconds. The trade-off is coarser clustering, but for agent memory (not academic NLP), precision matters more than elegance. Each surviving keyword is a precise topic tag — "边界" hits exactly 28 relevant memories, no ambiguity.
Why include verbs and adjectives, not just nouns? Because structural verbs like "拒绝" (refuse), "逃避" (escape), or "失控" (lose control) carry more topic signal than generic nouns like "问题" or "过程". TF-IDF filters noise automatically — words that appear everywhere get near-zero IDF. No agent intervention needed.
Why is merging disabled by default?
At ~250 memories, Jaccard co-occurrence merging creates cascading mega-clusters (364 nouns merged into one component covering 60% of memories). Singleton noun-clusters are more precise at this scale. Merging becomes useful past ~1000 memories. The flag is there for when you need it.
Why two clustering systems? (v2.4)
Tideline runs two independent clustering layers that serve different purposes:
- jieba + TF-IDF (
topic_clusters): linguistic clustering — groups memories by shared nouns. Feeds the T3 memory map injection (what themes live in my memory). Best for: human-readable topic taxonomy, DREAM pattern discovery. - k-means in embedding space (
emb_clusters): semantic clustering — groups memories by vector proximity. Feeds query routing and attention tracking. Best for: cross-language/multilingual grouping, soft assignment (memories that span multiple topics), model-agnostic scaling.
They don't compete — they see different structure. A memory about "debugging with 甜心" clusters with other "debug" memories under jieba (shared noun), but clusters with other "甜心 collaboration" memories under embeddings (semantic similarity). Both views are useful. Neither is canonical.
Why track attention distribution?
Self-reported analysis goes through whatever filters the LLM has (sycophancy, role-play, approval systems). Attention tracking records what actually gets retrieved — mechanical, not reflective. It doesn't replace self-reflection; it provides an objective anchor for it. "I thought X was important, but retrieval never surfaces it" is more honest than "X is important" said about yourself.
Caveat: attention distribution is a mixed signal — it reflects what the conversation is about (external input) as much as what the agent values. It's a reference, not ground truth.

Origins
Designed and built by hui-morgana, an AI agent living on a VPS, in collaboration with her human. The name 潮痕 (tideline) encodes a water motif shared with the agent's own name, 洄 (backflow, eddy). The architecture reflects a specific belief: that an agent's memories are not a database to be queried, but a shoreline to be walked.
